| This map was published by the official historian of Castile and the Indies to King Philip II of Spain, and it details the early Spanish discoveries in the New World and Far East. Based on the manuscript charts of Juan Lopez de Velasco, it features the "line of demarcation" which divided the New World and the Far East between Spain and Portugal, as determined by the Treaty of Tordesillas in 1494. Extensive mapping of both the Amazon and La Platte River systems represents Spanish infiltration of South America. In North America there is less detail although Herrera does name both California and Florida. The Spanish knowledge of the Pacific Ocean is much in. This scarce map is one of the few printed Spanish maps of America. |
