This large tellurian is a very grand scientific instrument that provides
a way to visualise the earth's relationship to the sun and the moon.
The sun is represented by a candle which when lit reflects on a
mirrored surface onto the globe. A geared mechanism allows the moon
to spin around the earth, which in turn spins around the sun. The
tellurian has a seven-inch terrestrial globe, which allows for a
certain amount of details, particularly physical features.
The ocean currents, mountain ranges and rivers are depicted and some
political borders are marked. The globe is attached to a bronze arm
that rests on a decorative base. The round base on which the elaborate
candleholder sits has concentric circles representing the months of
the year, seasons, zodiac signs and directional points.
