| Published by the celebrated Jesuit scholar Athanasius Kircher, this is one of the first scientific attempts to depict the features of the physical world. This extraordinary map depicts ocean currents, volcanoes and deep sea 'chasms'. Other notable features include prominent Northwest and Northeast sea passages and a vast southern continent. The depiction of what appear to be subterranean tunnels connecting the Mediterranean, Black and Caspian Seas reflect Kircher's notion of water movement through the Mediterranean. This is an excellent example of this fascinating and unusual map. |
