Description:
An important early Buddhist map of the world centred on India and “Jambu-Dvipa”, birthplace of Buddha, the mythological heart of Buddhist cosmography. It extends from Japan to the British Isles “Country of the Western Women”, with Europe shown as a group of islands just above the small island of “Africa” while a land bridge connects China to the unnamed continent of America. This map was the first to fuse traditional Buddhist belief with elements of European cartography, and remained the prototype for all Japanese Buddhist world maps until well into the 19th century.
