Description:
One of the cornerstone maps of the African continent, remaining the standard map of Africa well into the seventeenth century. The three sea monsters in the Atlantic Ocean and three ships engaged in battle in the Indian Ocean provide wonderful ornamentation. Ortelius introduced two important changes to the shape of the continent: The Cape of Good Hope became more pointed and the eastward extension of the continent was significantly reduced. Title appears at the lower left in a decorative strap work frame. [Richard Betz: The Mapping of Africa 12:].
