Beautifully engraved map of the island of Elba with illustrations of the fortresses of Ferrara and Longone now known as Portoferraio and Porto Azzurro respectively. The map is set above descriptive text of of Elba. Set within this text and seemingly totally unrelated, is a portrait of Fredericus Gualdus. Gualdus, a mysterious figure, lived in Venice in the 1680s, was the author of a work named "Revelation of the True Chemical Wisdom" and a contemporary Dutch newspaper claimed he was over four hundred years old. He is reputed to have disappeared after that report was released but he surfaces again in the early Freemason work, "Compass der Wiesen" which claims that he was still alive in 1782, which would make him 600 years old!
