Description:
BERTIUS ( PETRUS ) 1565-1629 Bertius was born and grew up in Beveren, Flanders. While young he travelled extensively in Europe. He moved to Amsterdam as a refugee from religious persecution. There he studied and subsequently became a professor of Mathematics and librarian at Leyden University. He also wrote on several subjects - Mathematics, History and Theology. Bertius’ cartographic contributions were mainly his miniature atlases - “Tabularum Geographicarum Contractarum” of 1600; and “Theatrum Geographiae Veteris” of 1618-19, which was based on Ptolemy’s “Geographia.” This contained 28 maps engraved by Mercator for his edition of 1578, plus 14 maps from Ortelius’ “Parergon.” After the publication of the second atlas, Bertius moved to Paris and became Official Cosmographer to Louis X111.
