Description:
This glorious map of the African continent draws on earlier sources, such as Mercator's map of 1595. Bridges the earlier workl of Ortelius with the latest cartographic sources. A number of significant geographical revisions have been made. Hondius had access to books of exploration by Pigafetta, Africanus and others. It is the region of the Congo which draws on Pigafetta's information and the new detail in Southern and Eastern Africa is likely to have been drawn from Portuguese and Dutch sources. This map features an elegant cartouche and many other embellishments, including, sea monsters, ships and depictions of both a camel and an elephant within the interior. Stunning original colour.
