Description:
Early decorative map of Sicily, with insignia and battling ships, perhaps reference to the Battle of Lepanto (Ottoman Venetian Wars). The Battle of Lepanto was a major naval engagement that took place in the Gulf of Padras (Ioanian Sea) in October 1571 between the Holy League (a coalition of states arranged by Pope Pius V) against the Ottoman Empire. It is said that it was the first defeat against the expanding Ottoman Empire and the victory of the Holy League is of great symbolic importance during a period of imperial expansion. Coloured.
