Description:
Early map of what is now Southwark, showcasing the link thatBlackfriars Bridge would provide across the Thames upon its completion.

Permission for the construction of Blackfriars Bridge was granted to alleviate the pressure on London Bridge, which was centuries old and Westminster Bridge. This map shows the state of the project in 1768, one year before the bridge opened and the roads which were being planned to develop the area. A circle south of the bridge marks the location of St. George's Circus, major junctions between Westminster Bridge Road, Borough Road and an as yet unnamed road later to become Blackfriars Road.

A vignette on the lower right shows the old bridge before it was knocked down and completely rebuilt in 1869. Coloured. [LDN6276]
