Description:
Stunning sea chart of the Black Sea, centred on a large compass rose and crisscrossed by rhumb lines. Istanbul appears in the lower-left corner and an extremely misshapen Crimea is top centre.

The geography of this map is based on the travels and writings of Nicolaes Witsen, a Dutch merchant and statesman who wrote the first European account of Siberia and Central Asia. Witsen served on a Dutch embassy to the Tsar of Muscovy in 1664-5 and returned with a wealth of knowledge about the Russian Empire. He was also appointed mayor of Amsterdam thirteen times.
