China, Korea, and Japan, mapping the wall of China and the Royal Channel. Additional information on Japan and Korea.
Moll's map was first issued in the early 18th century so it is most likely based on the Jesuit surveys by Martini. The actual source is his own large map of Asia first bound c.1715. A text panel on the lower right shares some statistics about the size of the Chinese Empire. Another panel on the upper right discusses the geographical uncertainty about the full extent of the Japanese islands and their relationship with the mysterious land of Iesso, now known as the Island of Hokaido. Copying his own soruce faithfully, Moll names the sea between the Korean Peninsula and Japan as "Sea of Corea". [SEAS5137]
