Russia Alba, sive Moscovia
European Russia, extending from the Baltic Sea to the Ural Mountains, and from the Caspian Sea to the White Sea. The small region in pink around modern-day Rostov-on-Don is Russian Tartary, an area contested at the time of publication by Russia and the Ottoman Empire. Peter the Great had managed to capture the strategically important Ottoman fort of Azov in 1696, allowing Russia access to the Black Sea. Though Azov was recaptured by the Ottoman Empire in 1711, it was eventually ceded to Russia for the last time after the Great Russo-Turkish War of 1768-74.
