Two maps of the Dalmatian Coast of Croatia: the Republic of Ragusa (upper) centred on the modern-day city of Dubrovnik, and the islands of Cres and Lošinj (lower) near Istria. These islands were at various times controlled by Venice as trading colonies, by the Ottomans as vassals, and by the Austrians, though at the time of publication Ragusa remained an independent merchant republic. Pieter Schenck Jr., the author of the map, credits the great Venetian geographer Vincenzo Coronelli as his source for this map.
