A New Map of Switzerland by A. Rouvier, Revised and Improved by John Rocque
Large and extremely detailed map of Switzerland divided into its cantons. The elegant title cartouche includes a vignette of William Tell shooting the apple from his son's head with a crossbow. The armorial shields of the cantons of switzerland, as well as it subjects and allies, are arranged around the title cartouche as a garland. The map also bears a substantial dedication to Field Marshal John Ligonier, Commander-in-Chief of the British Forces during the Seven Years' War.
This map was first published c.1760 by Abraham Rouvier, a Swiss cartographer. It was subsequently revised, as the title suggests, by John Rocque, Royal Geographer to the Prince of Wales. A small imprint above the legend in the lower-right corner states that this example was republished in 1771 by Carington Bowles.
Original hand-colour. [SWAS1505]
