Map of showing the voyage of the ship "Endurance" during the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1914-17 led by Sir Ernest Shackleton.
The Expedition was an attempt by Shackleton to make the first land crossing of Antarctica. Unfortunately, the enterprise met with difficulty almost immediately. The Endurance was trapped in pack ice on January 15th 1915 even before it made landfall in Vahsel Bay. Despite the heroic efforts of the crew, it remained trapped and drifted northwards on the ice until October 27th 1915 when it was finally crushed. The crew managed to escape the wreck and made their way over ice and sea, finally arriving at Elephant Island on April 15th 1916.
Shackleton and a crew of five then took the "James Caird" one of the life boats of the Endurance and made an 800 mile journey in an open boat to South Georgia from where he was able to mount a rescue of the rest of his crew. Remarkably, everyone survived.
This is now perceived as one of the greatest feats of survival in the annals of history.
This map shows the path of the voyage and the drift of the Endurance until its wrecking. Further, it shows the path of the crew and their eventual landfall on Elephant Island. It also shows the journey of the James Caird, labelled as "boat journey" between Elephant Island and South Georgia, as well as documenting the four attempts that Shackleton made to rescue the other crew members on Elephant Island. The first three failed due to environmental conditions.
