Though heavily outnumbered, a small Athenian fleet, under Admiral Phormio, twice defeated a much larger enemy force, guaranteeing Athenian naval supremacy in the Gulf of Corinth during the early Peloponnesian War. Phormio became an Athenian hero and was commemorated with a statue on the Acropolis. He is quoted as Athens' first great naval tactician.
