The map is split in half to differentiate between the two main areas, Bar-sur-Aubois and Bar-Sequanais, named for the two towns around which the vineyards are clustered. Vineyards and growing areas are highlighted in pink, whilst forested areas are in green. A smaller inset map shows an exclave area of the Cote des Bar surrounding Brienne-le-Chateau.

Though historically not considered part of the Champagne region until the early 20th century, the wines of this region are now regarded as some of the best up-and-coming champagne vineyards in France. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes from this region are highly valued by many of the master blenders.
