Description:

Terra Firma or modern day Colombia and parts of Ecuador Venezuela and central America.
This map is based on the great Dutch Golden Age maps which were derived from the work of Hessel Gerritz who compiled the maps for Johannes de Laet's Description of the West Indies published in 1625.
Montanus issued a landmark travel book on the New World in 1671 and illustrated it with several maps of the relevant regions based on de Laet/Gerritz maps who had access to Spanish and Portuguese sources. These maps are reduced in size from the folio maps and the cartouches have been altered but geographically they portray the same information as those of their contemporaries such as Blaeu, Jansson and Hondius.
