Description:
Stunning section from John Rocque's "A plan of the cities of London and Westminster, and borough of Southwark" covering Wapping, Shadwell, and Rotherhithe. At the time of publication this was the most detailed map of London ever published.

The level of detail is extraordinary. Individual trees are marked and the layout of gardens is represented. Rocque's tidy cartography and excellent engraving makes this area, at the time one of the poorest and seediest sections of London, look quaint and organized. Place names like Cutthroat Lane (located worringly close to Schoolhouse Lane), Dung Wharf, and Execution Dock are reminders that this area was not as pleasant as it appears on Rocque's map.
