Description:
Copper-engraved map of Tartary, or modern-day Central Asia. A small map above shows the route of Ferdinand Verbiest, a Dutch Jesuit, from Beijing to Kirin. Verbiest was an influential Jesuit mathematician and astronomer who helped to correct the Chinese calendar, re-established the Beijing observatory, and is believed to have invented the first automobile, though it is uncertain whether Verbiest's design was ever built to scale.

English text below and on the verso provides a fascinating contemporary description of the region which extends from the Caspian Sea to the Pacific Ocean through Siberia and Mongolia.
