Description:
This chart of the Queensland coast accompanies one of the earliest and most important studies of coral on the Great Barrier Reef. William Saville-Kent was a pioneering marine biologist who was made Inspector of Fisheries in Tasmania in 1884, then Commissioner of Fisheries for Queensland in 1889 and the same position for Western Australia in 1892. Among his pioneering research was a study of coral on the Great Barrier Reef, possibly the first time a study of this type had been undertaken, research into sustainable fishing, and studies in pearl aquaculture. Modern cultured pearls are largely a result of Saville-Kent's research.
