Splendid Georgian sea chart of the south coast of Devon, extending from Exeter in the east to Wembury in the west. A large inset map provides extra detail of Dartmouth and the River Dart. Two long panoramic views show the appearance of the coast around Dartmouth as seen from 2-3 miles off the coast. A grand title cartouche, a half compass rose, and rhumb lines provide additional decoration. The popular seaside resorts of Torquay, Paignton, and Salcombe also appear on the map, though all three are only marked as small hamlets. Rocks and other hazards for mariners are noted, and prominence is given to buildings or landmarks which would be visible from the sea. Overall, a beautiful example of an 18th century sea chart of one of Britain's most scenic coastlines. [DEVON567] |
