Herman Moll's rare map of North and South Carolina based on the "latest accounts" from the English colonies. An inset maps the churches, English settlements, and Native American villages surrounding Charleston, South Carolina.
This map was published in David Humphreys's An Historical Account of the Incorporated Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts. Containing their Foundation, Proceedings, and the Success of their Missionaries in the British Colonies, to the Year 1728, which compiled contemporary stories, reports, and news events from the colonies to describe the ongoing effort to convert the Native American groups in the Carolinas to Christianity. This map draws on those same sources, making it a fascinating contemporary depiction of the state of the British colonies in North and South Carolina, and the most detailed single page map of this region before 1750.
