Early woodcut view of the mythical kingdom of the Amazons, the legendary warrior women of Ancient Greek mythology. Three Amazon women are charmingly depicted wearing medieval armour and carrying medieval weapons above an imagined view of a medieval city, possibly intended to depict the Amazon capital of Themiscyra Pontus.

The text above the city view provides a brief historical account of the Amazons from their origins in Scythia to their conquest of Asia Minor and supposed establishment of Ephesus, Smyrna, and many other cities. Their custom of living apart of men except for the purpose of mating is also detailed, as are many of their battles with the Greeks.

Published in Hartmann Schedel's Nuremberg Chronicle, one of the most important printed works of the 15th century. Strong impression. [WLD4554]
