Description:
Rare map of the southern portion of the Diocese of Trondheim in northern Norway, extending from Trondheim (Dronthem) to Alesund. Embellished with two elaborate cartouches, both beautifully engraved.

This map was published in Moses Pitt's short-lived "English Atlas", an attempt by Pitt to issue a grand English atlas based on Jan Jansson's "Atlas Maior". The project was a collaboration between Pitt and the heir to the Jansson firm, Johann van Waesbergen, and Steven Swart. Four volumes were issued before the collaborators ran out of money and were forced to halt. Moses Pitt was forced to declare bankruptcy and spent two years in a debtors' prison. As a result of the project's failure, maps from the "English Atlas" are rare.

Original hand-colour. [SCAN1939]
