Georg Braun & Frans Hogenberg
34 x 42 cm
This plan of Exeter appears in Vol. VI of Braun and Hogenberg's "Civitates Orbis Terrarum" the first atlas dedicated urban plans. The first volume was issued in 1572 and this volume, issued in 1617, was the last.
The plan was taken from an inset of John Speed's map of Devon, published in 1611, which showed this plan on the lower right. Speed in turn referenced this plan from an earlier map commissioned by John Hooker, First Chamberlain of Exeter in 1587. The engraver for the plan was, confusingly, Remy Hogenberg. It is not known if Remy was related to Frans Hogenberg, one of the main engravers for the Civitates Orbis Terrarum. Whether or not there was a relation, this plan did not appear in the atlas until thirty years later.
