Abraham Ortelius
34 x 50 cm
This is one of Ortelius' more peculiar maps, with the left half showing a map of Anatolia with an orientation showing east to the top of the page. The right half of the sheet is evenly split between a map of Egypt and a map showing the Bay of Tunis, identifying it with ancient Carthage, the great foe of the early Roman Empire. Furthermore, a note on the map refers to the capture of Tunis or Carthage by Charles V, the Holy Roman Emperor from the Ottoman Empire in 1535. It was one of the grandest and largest amphibious attacks of the 16th century.
