John Speed
38 x 50 cm
Rare early-edition
county map of Radnorshire from one of the most famed collections of
British county maps. Beautifully illustrated with local heraldry and town plan
inset. Latin text on verso.
The map depicts the entirety of Radnorshire, bordered by
Brecknockshire to the south, Bedfordshire to the east, Montgomeryshire to the
north, and Cardiganshire to the west. Major settlements and bodies of water are
marked.
In the lower-left corner, a decorative title cartouche
features the heraldic Royal Coat of Arms of England, indicating that the
publication was produced under the royal assent of James I. The lower-right
corner contains a scale of miles accompanied by an ornate 16-point compass
oriented to the north.
The upper-right corner displays a more elaborate Royal Coat
of Arms representing the Union of the Crowns. This heraldic composition
includes lions, fleurs-de-lis, a harp, and a chained unicorn, symbolizing
England, France, Ireland, and Scotland respectively. Centred at the top of the
map is a badge of three ostrich feathers encircled by a crown, the personal
emblem of the Prince of Wales.
Finally, the upper-left corner contains a small inset plan
of the town of New Radnor, depicting its castle and church. Within the inset’s
right-hand corner appear the Arms of the Lords of Radnor.
Uncoloured. Verso image on request. [WCTS253].
