Berkshire. A fine map of the county from the first edition of Speed's seminal atlas, 'The Theatre of Great Britaine'. Above the map is a grand panoramic view of Windsor Castle and a full-body portrait of King James I. There is also a list of early Knights of the Garter and a miniature illustration of the Battle of Radcot Bridge in 1387.
The geography is based on the map of Southeast England by Christopher Saxton. The large vignette of Windsor is based on the image produced in the Civitates Orbis Terrarum, the first atlas dedicated to urban plans edited by Georg Braun and engraved by Frans Hogenberg.
