Borodino represented the Russian army's final attempt to prevent Napoleon from capturing Moscow. It was the bloodiest single day of fighting of the Napoleonic wars with over 70,000 combined losses.
The French army managed to drive the Russians back, capturing Moscow the following week, but it was a pyrrhic victory as they failed to decisively defeat the Russian army.
Instead of being humiliated into negotiating for peace, Tsar Alexander was able to retreat from Moscow, regroup, and wait for the Russian winter to force Napoleon to withdraw.
