Talavera was a minor victory for the British and their Spanish allies as they held against repeated waves of French attacks outside of the town of Talavera de la Reina. After the battle, Wellington was forced to retreat back into Portugal for fear of being cut off by a larger French army approaching from the rear, so the battle ultimately led to no strategic advantage for either side. This is the action for which Wellington was raised to the peerage as Viscount Wellington of Talavera, having prevented his army in Iberia from being wiped out.
