New England. Mid-eighteenth century French map of the region. The boundaries of the English colonies are roughly sketched with dotted lines.
This map was enclosed within the Histoire des Voyages, a multi-volume encyclopaedia edited by Abbe Prevost and containing literally hundreds of maps and engravings by Jacques Nicholas Bellin. It was highly successful and due to its distribution, became one of the standard works of exploration in the 18th century.
