South-Western Africa and the Cape of Good Hope, mapping the tribal lands of its native people the Khoekhoe, named Hottentots by early Dutch settlers.
This map was part of the "Histoire Generale des Voyages", a vast geo-historical encyclopaedia focusing mainly on French explorers and their deeds. Jacques Nicholas Bellin provided most of the maps and illustrations within the work. He based his maps mainly on earlier French accounts or naval charts in the French Admiralty to which he had access as the Hydrographer to the French Navy.
