Jacques-Nicolas Bellin
22.9 x 15.2 cm
Copper-engraved chart of the Philippines and Spice Islands, presented with some speculative coastlines, and in the case of Combava [now West Nusa Tenggara island] which is mapped with dotted southern coast.
A note in the upper left translates "although this map is drawn up with all possible accuracy, the names of many small islands have been deleted to avoid confusion, only needing the general position here, the detail will come later".
Bellin's main source for maps of the Far East was Jean Baptiste de Mannevillette, a captain and navigator who sailed for the French East India Company. He initially used this map for the "Histoire Generale des Voyages" edited by Abbee Prevost.
This example appeared in the Petit Atlas Maritime of 1764, on this occasion with its characteristic original green colouring. [SEAS5546]
