Jacques-Nicolas Bellin
20.3 x 30.5 cm
As with most 18th century maps of the Philippines after 1734, this map was based on Father Pedro Murillo Velarde's map issued in Manila. Unusually, Bellin issued three maps of the Philippines, initially to illustrate the "Histoire Generale des Voyages"; one shows the northern island, the second the southern islands and one map showing the whole archipelago together with part of Indonesia.
In 1764, Bellin adapted these maps and used them in his "Petit Atlas Maritime", a vast collection of sea charts issued in five volumes containing charts from all parts of the world.
This is the map showing the southern islands from the Atlas Maritme. Original colour. [SEAS5547]
