The Challenger Expedition, as it became known, was conducted between 1872-6 and was the first oceanographic research voyage. It was a joint enterprise organised by the Royal Society and the University of Edinburgh. Due to its length, many eminent scientist were associated with it. Its report was not finished until 1895 and ran to 29,500 pages of notes, maps and diagrams. Today, its study is regarded as fundamental to the science of oceanography. [USA9845]
