Very nice example of Blaeu's map of Northumberland with a large gallery of armorial shields on the upper left.
The map's geography is based on that of the map of the same county published by John Speed in 1611. However, the engraving style as well as the aesthetic is very different than that of the earlier map. The large collection of shields on the upper left illustrates the many aristocratic families with connections to Northumberland, particularly the Percy family. Descriptive Dutch text on reverse.
