Very attractive example of Blaeu's map of Cumberland, now part of Cumbria.
Geographically, the map is based on John Speed but the illustrations and decoration is very much Blaeu's own style. The large pastoral cartouche is reminiscent of Dutch artistry. The coats of arms are associated with large aristocratic landowners of the area while two large ships are shown off the coast. Descriptive Dutch text on reverse.
