Willem & Jan Blaeu
40 x 54 cm
A handsome county map of Sussex with multiple decorative features including a fleet of ships off the coast, several heraldic shields and the coat of arms of England.
Geographically the map is based on John Speed, but the aesthetic elements are Blaeu's own additions. A large royal standard with the three lions of England appears in the upper right and the royal coats of arms featuring the English lion and the Scottish unicorn appears in the upper left. Between these are four coats of arms representing important local noblemen from history, including the Earls of Sussex, Chichester, and Arundel.
Original hand-colour. Dutch descriptive text on reverse. Image of reverse available on request. [SUSSEX656]
