Fascinating map of North America showing the new political order after the end of the Spanish American and Revolutionary Wars.
The newly independent United States is shown with its western border along the Mississippi River with a dubious source in Lake Bourbon in Canada. The Pacific Northwest is left as a geographical conundrum, with California or New Albion shown with a northern coastline edged by the mythical River of the West. Above that, there is speculation of the existence of either the "Western Sea", or the Northwest Passage or both. Louisiana is vaguely delineated to separate it from New Mexico but historically both belonged to the Spanish Crown at this time. California also shows a mountain range through most of its area labelled as the "Snowy Mountains" a direct translation of "Sierra Nevada".
