A miniature map of the Azores in the Atlantic with an elaborate cartouche featuring a ship.
This map was based on Sanson's folio map, based on Flemish sources; in 1672, the Azores had just been re-instated as a Portuguese possession after the Iberian Union ended in 1642.
Published in Pierre Duval's Geographie Universelle, a pocket atlas composed largely of reduced versions of Nicolas Sanson's maps. Duval was Sanson's nephew and pupil, and he continued publishing Sanson maps long after his uncle's death, usually under his own imprint and with updates and modifications.
