Despite these tumultuous events, the map is basically a reduction of the map of the Empire first published in 1619. It was the first regional map of India and the first map of the Moghul Empire. It was drawn by William Baffin, the notable Polar explorer and compiled from the notes of Sir Thomas Roe, diplomat, traveller and friend to Jahangir, Shah Jahan's father.
Their map acted as s source for maps of the region throughout most of the 17th century.
Published in Pierre Duval's Geographie Universelle, a pocket atlas composed largely of reduced versions of Nicolas Sanson's maps. Duval was Sanson's nephew and pupil, and he continued publishing Sanson maps long after his uncle's death, usually under his own imprint and with updates and modifications.
