This plan was published posthumously under the imprint of Fayard Freres after the founder of the firm, Artheme had passed away in 1895. It was based on French surveys of the city made by French military.
Remy Hausermann, the engraver, was also one of the principal engravers for missionary works published in France, which may have given him access to maps compiled by Missionary societies active in China.
