Rossi states his source on the cartouche. Antonio Magini published the first regional atlas of Italy. He began the project in 1594 and it was published posthumously in 1620 by his son. The work was immediately adopted as the major source for maps of Italy both by native and international map makers such as the Blaeu family.
Arguably, this map is larger, clearer and easier to read than the source map. It is superbly engraved and is a particularly strong impression of the plate. It is also adorned by an elaborate cartouche on the lower right together with a dedication to Curzio Sergardi.
