French military engineer Francois Kauffer began the monumental task of surveying the Ottoman capital and its environs in the early 1770s while in the entourage of the French aristocrat, Choiseul-Gouffier. The latter returned to Constantinople in 1784, as French ambassador with Kauffer in his entourage again. In 1786, Kauffer produced several updated and revised maps and plans of Constantinople published by Jean Baptiste Chevalier. Choiseul-Gouffier lost his position as ambassador after the Revolution of 1789 and Kauffer officially entered the service of the Ottoman ruler in 1792. From then on, he was heavily involved in the surveying and strengthening of Ottoman fortresses on the Bosphorus until his death in 1801.
