Henricus Hondius
38 x 48 cm
Iconic 17th century map of Brazil by Hondius with north being shown on the right of the sheet. Insets of All Saints Bay and Pernambuco on the upper part of the map.
This map is a larger and more elaborate version of Hessel Gerritz's highly important map of Brazil included in Johannes de Laet's account of the New World. Geographically the map records the same information although Hondius adds the insets and the vignettes in the interior. The orientation with north shown to the right of the sheet mirrors Gerritz.
Original colour. [SAM3646]
