Unusual map showing the pilgrimage route from Cairo to Mecca, as related by Philip of Tunis.
Philip of Tunis was a notorious Turkish nobleman, adventurer and corsair in the 17th century Mediterranean. He was born as Mohammed Chelebi, son of the Dey of Tunis. He was converted to Christianity in Sicily and spent decades in the courts of France, Venice, the Papal States and Spain, proposing to establish a Christian Kingdom in North Africa. He reconverted back to Islam in the early 1650s and undertook the pilgrimage to Mecca from Cairo.
This map is based on the report from this journey and details the way stations and towns along the way. A small inset on the upper right also shows the route from Cairo to Gaza. As well as Mecca and the pilgrimage, the location of Jeddah and Medina are also shown.
