Joshua Archer
15 x 23 cm
This example of the map was issued in Pinnock's "Guide to Knowledge", originally a magazine and a pioneer in this unusual method of reverse or negative printing. Whether the engravings by Archer were originally done as a marketing tool to differentiate the magazine from competitors, or simply for economic reasons is unknown but ultimately this form of printing was deemed unsuccessful and the later maps from the series returned to a more traditional white background with black printing.
