Egypt: Called in the Country Missir
Egypt focused on the Nile. Issued by Laurie and Whittle but based on D'Anville.
When this map was first issued by D'Anville in 1765, the territory of Egypt was perceived in Europe to the part of the Ottoman Empire and focused around the great cities of Cairo, Alexandria and around the banks of the Nile flowing south into then Alexandria. Little else was known around the desert interior of the country.
Due to his own scholarship and consultation of Ottoman sources, D'Anville was able to add far greater detail to the region, including a vast network of canals around the banks of Nile. He also added the route of the centuries old pilgrimage caravan from Cairo to Mecca. It was details and scholarship such as this which made D'Anville one of the most referenced and consulted of all 18th century European map makers even after his death in 1782. Laurie and Whittle, among many other English map makers, regularly issued his maps in English with their own imprint but crediting him with the original information.
